Lesson information and recording attainments

Lesson information and recording attainments

The lesson information area is where you can view your lesson, objectives and mark attainments against the lesson objectives.

How to access the lesson information

The lesson information can be accessed by clicking on a lesson from My planner, clicking on the 'Plan' button in My Lessons, or from 'Plan' if you are accessing the My planner shortcut from your homepage. Maestro will now allow you to see any previous attainments of an objective at the planning and teaching stage. When you enter the lesson information area, it will tell you in the top right of the page if you are in Planning mode (when the lesson has been scheduled to be taught) or Assessment mode

The lesson information area has 3 sections by default:
  1. Lessons - lesson description, resource links, teacher notes (with the option to add/edit in Planning mode) and any school adaptations.
  2. Objectives - the planned objectives for the lesson (including the option to view progression).
  3. Attainments - view any previous attainments for the planned objectives and the place to mark attainment after you have taught the lesson when in Assessment mode. Click here for more details on how to complete lesson attainments.

If you choose to add objectives from the Literacy, Numeracy or Digital Competence Frameworks or the Descriptions of Learning statements (DoL), you will see a 4th section appear as a tab called 'LNF/DCF/DoL' attainments.

Notes
You can save time marking attainments by creating Learning groups for smaller groups within a class. Click the link to see more.

Prior attainments

The three coloured dots show the three most recent attainments for that objective (the most recent on the left).

To view children prior attainments for skills in an upcoming lesson, go to Plan and assess then My lessons and click the 'Plan' button for a lesson that is scheduled to be taught in the future. If you click on the 'Attainment' tab at the top of the page, it allows you to view the progression of that singular objective.

Completing attainments

Pupils' attainment of a lesson’s knowledge and skills objectives can be recorded in a variety of ways. It can be done through My planner, in the projects, from your Maestro homepage and in the ‘My lessons’ area.

For further information on completing attainments, please see the additional articles in this section on the left.

Knowledge and skills objectives can also be recorded on the Class attainment page, should you want to record objectives that have not been taught through a planned lesson.

When you click on a 'Taught?' button, you will see the following modal:

Using My planner (formerly known as the Timetable) is an easy way to record your children's attainment at the end of each lesson. Once you have taught a lesson for which you have set a date and start time, you can then record the lesson attainment.

Recording Attainments

To record the children's attainment after a lesson:
  1. Go to My planner in the left-hand menu.
  2. Select the required lesson.
  3. Click 'Taught?' in the bottom right-hand corner.

On the screen that appears, you can see all the classes or learning groups that you are assigned to.  Choose whether you want to assess the whole class or any specific learning groups that you have created by selecting them.

The class/group will automatically have 'Attained' selected. By clicking on this, you can change the attainment for the whole class:

If the whole class was present and everyone had attained the objective, you can click on 'Save' and Maestro would record that attainment judgement for all children.

However, if you have added any LNF/DCF objectives, or if some children were absent for that lesson or didn’t fully attain the lesson objectives, click on 'Edit individual attainments' to load up the lesson’s attainment page.

All children will be marked as 'Attained' for the objectives that were taught as part of the lesson, if that was selected on the previous page..

By clicking on the attained button at the top of each row, the attainment for the whole class may be changed for any of the objectives. For example, the pupils may not have attained the core knowledge, so by clicking at the top of a column, everyone's attainments can be changed at once.

Editing Attainments

When you click to 'Edit individual attainments', it will take you to the 'Attainments' tab in the lesson information area, so you may record coverage and attainment of individual children, groups or classes.

1. Choose your class or learning group (you can select multiple groups/classes if required).

2. You will be able to see their previous attainments for the planned objectives. The three dots show the three most recent attainments for that objective (with the most recent on the left):

Click 'Select attainment' to record skills and knowledge as AttainedPartially attainedNot attained or Not taught (use the top Select attainments to fill a whole column or the whole row).

You may also click on individual attainments to make amendments as required.  Use the 'Prev' and 'Next' buttons to look at the previous or next year group’s objectives, and record those as attained if required.

Clicking 'View progression' enables you to view the progression of that singular objective in a new tab but you will not be able to add any objectives. Click 'Save'.

IdeaYou can view attainments in Track Pupil Progress and Actual coverage.

The coloured circles will show what the children have attained on the last three occasions when they were taught this objective. If you click on the circles, you see a list of all the times that the objective has been taught, when it was taught and what the child attained.

However, individual pupils may be edited, if required, by clicking on the 'Select attainment' button next to their name to change the attained judgements for all the objectives.

If you had planned LNF/DCF objectives for the lesson, open the tab and select whether the pupils have attained the skill or not. Children will be automatically marked as 'Covered' for the attainment and then you can deselect individuals to speed up the process. Once you have completed all the changes, just click on 'Save'  in the top left corner and close the tab at the top.

Review Attainments

You can also review all lessons you have recorded attainments by clicking on the lesson in My planner and going to the 'Attainments' tab. The 'Taught?' button will now say 'Review' so that you can look back at the recorded attainments and edit if necessary.

You may also select 'Delete attainments' to remove all the attainments made for the lesson.

NotesOn the Review page, you are unable to move between year groups for the skills and knowledge. This screen is designed only to amend the original attainments made.
