The progression section of the Cwricwlwm designer shows you the progression of the objectives, (skills and knowledge) through your curriculum project choices. The skills and knowledge framework provides clear AoLE endpoints from Nursery to Year 6, and is a great tool for senior leaders, AoLE leaders and teachers.
Skills and knowledge statements (objectives) have been created to ensure comprehensive curriculum progression. Where possible, we referred to the Curriculum for Wales 'Progression Steps' for guidance. These objectives are grouped by aspects (key concepts or areas), resulting in a connected and cohesive progression framework.
This allows you to see the skills and knowledge assigned to each year group (in all AoLEs) and to see how many lessons are intended to be taught to cover each aspect.
Objectives by AoLE
The Objectives by AoLE tab shows the Cornerstones skills and knowledge framework by AoLE and shows your intended progression of skills and knowledge based on your Intended coverage. This is your intended progression and is what may or may not be taught over an extended period.
All skills and knowledge within this progression framework have been created by Cornerstones, and are not statutory. They provide depth to the AoLEs.
If you want to search for a specific aspect or skill, press CTRL+F to show the search box.
Each AoLE has been broken down into aspects. These appear down the left of the screen.
Next to each aspect is the skills and knowledge for each year group from Nursery to Year 6.
- A statement in bold black marked covered is covered by the activities within your project choices.
- A statement in bold black marked optional is covered by the activities within your project choices, but only as an optional skill in an activity that teachers may choose not to cover.
- A statement in light grey is not covered by the activities within your project choices.
Although the skills and knowledge are not statutory, you may wish to assign skills to a project to increase the depth of coverage in a particular area. To do this, click on Assign and choose the project that you wish the objective to be taught in.
For example, in Expressive Arts, the Curriculum for Wales statement of what matters is 'Responding and reflecting, both as artist and audience, is a fundamental part of learning in the expressive arts'.
We've broken this down into a number of separate skills - here are just some examples:
Within the Evaluation aspect:
Year 1: Say what they like about their own or others' work using simple artistic vocabulary.
Year 4: Give constructive feedback to others about ways to improve a piece of artwork.
Year 6: Adapt and refine artwork in light of constructive feedback and reflection.
Within the Compare and Contrast aspect:
Year 2: Describe similarities and differences between artwork on a common theme.
Year 5: Describe and discuss how different artists and cultures have used a range of visual elements in their work.
Within the Listening aspect:
Reception: Listen to a variety of music and talk about how it makes them feel
Year 4: Describe how different instruments are used throughout a piece of music to add interest and meaning.
Your coverage may tell you that you are covering the first Year 1 objective as part of your intended curriculum, and therefore have coverage of that statement of what matters. However, to develop the skills and ensure that you are building on skills and knowledge, you may also wish to assign one of the objectives from other year groups.
Click on any covered objective to show the projects and number of lessons that the objective is being covered by. You can click on the number of lessons to look at the lesson detail, or plan the lesson into your timetable.
