Teacher assessment

Teacher assessment

The Teacher assessment page collates all the information that has been carried out using the Taught/Assess functionality, test data and any discrete attainments to support a teacher to make a summative judgement. Individual school policy will dictate when summative judgements should be made, (read more about developing an assessment policy) but we recommend three points during the school year (autumn, spring, summer).

Teacher Assessment

Teacher assessment will allow you to record your termly judgements on how the pupils have attained towards the end of year expectations. The school year and term will be automatically selected but you may change this as required. You can also select either a class or learning group and the subject that you require, using the filters at the top of the page.

NotesNote: you will only be able to select a class, cohort or group that you have been assigned to by your Maestro admins in school.

If you select a class that you are not assigned to, a warning message will come up and you will not be able to enter or edit any teacher assessments for that class.

Under the filters, you will see a progress bar. This will show how much of the planned curriculum for that class has been covered:

You can click on the link to see exactly which knowledge and skills objectives have been covered, when they were taught and which are yet to be taught, by clicking on the side arrows next to each objective:

After clicking on the number of objectives attained/not attained, you can view a list of the taught objectives for the child. Clicking on the side arrows, next to the objectives, will open more information about the lesson, the objective, when it was taught and by whom.

Types of assessment

The Teacher assessment page will hold all the information that you have entered into Maestro about the pupils. This information can then be used in conjunction with any extra information that teachers have, such as their pupils’ work in that subject or any observations that have been made about each child to help form the teacher assessment judgements.

The left-hand side of the main page is where you can record the teacher assessment judgements. There are no algorithms that will create the teacher assessment judgements and this must be completed by a teacher who is assigned to the class.

There are two different types of assessments you can choose from, and schools can decide which they wish to do.

In the autumn and the spring, teachers have two options when making summative assessments.

  1. Simple assessments
  2. Detailed assessments

In the summer term, teachers are expected to make a 'Detailed' judgement or use the national descriptors in Y2 and Y6 for reading, writing, maths, and science.

Simple assessment

In the autumn and spring terms, the system by default is set to 'Simple assessment' which gives teachers the options of:

  1. On track to meet the expected standard
  2. Not on track to meet the expected standard

However, this can be changed to 'Detailed assessment' if preferred.

Detailed assessment

In the summer term (and if chosen in the autumn and spring terms), teachers can record a more detailed assessment with the options:

  1. Above the expected standard*
  2. Greater depth within the expected standard
  3. Within the expected standard
  4. Just within the expected standard
  5. Borderline expected standard
  6. Below the expected standard*

* If a child is Above or Below, a number of months can be added to show how far above/below they are working.

National descriptors

In Y2 and Y6, you will have the additional option to complete your end of year teacher assessments for reading, writing, maths and science using either our Detailed assessment judgements or the National descriptors.

Making assessments

Select the School year, Term, Class and Subject you want to record assessments for. The selected pupils will appear on the left, with their respective year group.

If children have 'maintained' the same assessment from a previous term, click  Maintained under the term you wish to copy. All assessments will be filled the same as they were that term (in the simple/detailed format you have selected).

 Changing the assessment type

To change the assessment type for the whole class/group, click either above the children's names

To change the assessment type for a single pupil, click either in the row for the pupil you want to change.

Idea
Schools may choose to use simple for some subjects (e.g. Art and music) and detailed in other subjects (Reading, Writing, Maths). In autumn and spring, you can choose a mixture of simple and detailed assessments if required for individual pupils.

To make a new assessment:

  1. Below each pupil, select the appropriate judgement depending on your chosen assessment type (Simple or Detailed).
  2. Once all assessments have been made, click Save.

NotesNote: Use the options at the top of the Assessment column to make a judgement for all pupils, then edit individuals if required.
