Group analysis helps Senior Leaders to identify trends in their cohort data and combine attainment and progress data between two periods of time.
Creating your group analysis report
- Select the Year group(s) you want to analyse.
- Select the From point. (This will be an 'End of Year' assessment).
- Select the To point. (A term within this year, or the previous summer term).
- Select the AoLE(s).
Report options
- Use the Report options to refine the groups you want to visually compare (hide rows/turn highlights on).
- Turning the Highlight inconsistent progress on gives a visual indicator of things that may need attention by highlighting the cell red.
- The row search enables you to view any particular group by typing in a particular heading/cohort name.
What does the report show?
There are two views: Simple and Detailed.
The Simple view is great for printing and gives an overview of Teacher Assessment (as completed in Track Pupil Progress), changes since the previous term, and a progress indicator.

The Detailed view gives the same overview of Teacher Assessment (as completed in Track Pupil Progress), changes since the previous term, and a progress indicator.

You can print the report via the print button in the top right corner.
To print the report with colours, select 'Include background graphics' in your print settings.
Interpreting your report (example)
When looking in at your own reports, look at anything with two or more red teacher assessment (%), difference (dot) or progress indicator (arrow). Pay particular attention to any areas where the whole cell background is highlighted in red.
Let's take a look at the overview for a Y5 class when looking at the data from the end of Y4 compared to the end of Y1.
Let us look at 'All pupils' in 'Maths & numeracy.
- 44% of the Y5 children (11/25) have been assessed as working at or above the expected standard.
- This is 24% lower than when they were at the End of Year 1.
- Overall, 64% or more of them are not making consistent progress (demonstrated by the red arrow).
If we switch to the Detailed view you can see that only 12% of pupils have made consistent progress and 24% of pupils have made notable progress between End of Y1 and End of Y4.
Clicking the 44% (teacher assessment %) will bring up a box with the children’s assessments and progress. Sort by progress to get those not making progress at the top of the modal.
Initial questions that could be asked are:
- What do you know about these children? Is this a known issue?
- Could it be that the scores at the first assessment point were inflated?
- What interventions have been used, if any to support the children?
If you close the box and select additional year groups, for example, Y4 and Y6, does it look like the issue is with all children in 'Maths & numeracy', or is it just Year 5 that needs attention?

Always take note of the number of children. Decisions should only be made when based on large enough numbers and or data validated by other evidence.
