Group analysis helps to identify trends in their cohort data and combine attainment and progress data between two periods of time.
Creating your group analysis report
Select the Year group(s) you want to analyse
Select the From point. (This will be an 'End of Year' assessment).
Select the To point. (A term within this year, or the previous summer term).
Select the Subject(s).
Report options
Use the Report options to refine the groups you want to visually compare (hide rows/turn highlights on).
Turning the Highlight inconsistent progress on gives a visual indicator of things that may need attention by highlighting the cell red.
The row search enables you to view any particular group by typing in a particular heading/cohort name.
What does the report show?
There are two views: Simple and Detailed.
The Simple view is great for printing and gives an overview of Teacher assessment, changes since the previous term, and a progress indicator.

The Detailed view gives the same overview of Teacher Assessment, changes since the previous term, and a progress indicator. It also reveals a progress bar, which shows the breakdown of children within the categories of Notable, Consistent, and Inconsistent progress.

You can print the report via the print button in the top right corner.
Interpreting your report (example)
- Select Year 6.
- Select End of Year 2.
- Select 2020/21 Summer term.
- Select Reading, Writing and Maths.

First, look at anything with two or more red teacher assessment (%), difference (dot) or progress indicator (arrow). Pay particular attention to any areas where the whole cell background is highlighted in red.
Let us look at 'Boys' in 'Writing':
65% of boys (32/49) have been assessed as working at or above the expected standard.
This is 18% lower than at the End of Year 2 (Summer 2018).
Overall, 40% or more of them are not making consistent progress (demonstrated by the red arrow).
If we switch to the detailed view you can see that 41% of pupils have made inconsistent progress between End of Y2 and End of Y5.

Clicking the 65% (teacher assessment %) will bring up a box with the children’s assessments and progress. Sort by 'Progress' to get those not making progress at the top of the modal.
What do you know about these children?
Could it be that the scores at the first assessment point were inflated?
If you close the box, teacher assessment percentage (%), and select additional year groups, for example, Y4 and Y5, does it look like the issue is with all boys in Writing, or is it just Year 6 that needs attention?

Boys' writing is lower also in Year 5, but not in Year 4. The issue is not systemic.
Always take note of the number of children as this will reflect the percentages shown. Decisions should only be made when based on large enough numbers and/or data validated by other evidence.
